The Portsmouth Housing Authority selected SGE and its divisions Northeast Engineers and Consultants and Sustainable Global Energy to assist with their modernization program for the Quaker Manor complex (40 elderly housing units). The program focuses on energy management and conservation, and study the possibility of using wind power to provide electricity for the development.
Funded through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the project will incorporate most, if not all, of the following energy management and conservation upgrades:
The Portsmouth Housing Authority also obtained a grant from the State of Rhode Island to conduct a wind assessment study for an on-site wind turbine to generate electricity for Quaker Manor and the adjacent Quaker Estates IV (18 elderly housing units). The complex could become the first affordable housing developments in Rhode Island to be powered using renewable energy. SGE will begin site evaluation to determine wind turbine location, height, etc. to insure maximum electricity production next month.
This new assignment comes as Northeast Engineers & Consultants completes design and construction management services for the 4th phase of Quaker Estates, a four-building complex with 33 elderly housing units adjacent to Quaker Manor.
